Day 6: Lake Wabigoon to Wawa, Ontario

Wow. Last night. A night to remember; there actually were five or six trains throughout the night which sounded like they were right outside our tent. However, we were afraid to look; when I would unzip the tent door a little, sand and grit would blow in from the really strong winds which hit around 1:00 AM this morning. Much of the night we watched the tent poles flex and the entire tent collapse to about 2/3 of its typical height. Nothing broke, which is rather amazing. That is, nothing, if you don't count the air mattress, which, while new, has not held air each of the three times we have used it; it will be replaced very soon, as we are too old to really appreciate the cold, hard ground.

Not sure if I got any sleep, but it did not prevent me from putting nearly 500 miles behind us today; we're now about 120 miles from the eastern end of Lake Superior, in a little town of around 3000 people called......yep, Wawa, Ontario.  Here are some pics:
 Sunset in Wawa, ONT.
The town's namesake; the wild goose. This is an impressive sculpture.
In case you thought I was making it up; Wawa is in Wikipedia!
Interesting geology on the north shore of Lake Superior.
Lake Superior; the second largest freshwater lake in the world....by volume!
Birches turning color; winter is fast approaching.
One of Lake Superior's many islands.

  1. That's quite a name for a town. The US always seem to have these odd little towns :-) Happy you 2 survived the winds & near death experience with those trains right outside tfe tent :-)))
